The World’s Most Transformative Buildings and Urban Planning Projects from over 50 Nations Take Center Stage during The 2025 International Architecture Awards and the Main Global Event ‘The City and The World’ at the Foot of Acropolis in Athens, Greece, this September 19-21.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (SEPTEMBER 1, 2025) — Now in its 20th year, the International Architecture Awards®, the first and oldest global tributes of their kind, recognize the world’s best new 2025 winning design projects, including private homes, religious buildings, schools, airports, transportation centers, museums, skyscrapers, squares, urban parks, bridges, infrastructure, as well as historic restorations and renovations, as an example of today’s highest caliber of architectural response to social, cultural, and environmental challenges.

Organized jointly by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, The International Architecture Awards have become the world’s most prestigious award for new, cutting-edge architecture and urban design.

Established in 2005, the International Architecture Awards are the highest global accolade awarded to buildings and urban planning and landscape architecture projects that demonstrate visionary design thinking, originality, excellence of execution, thereby making a distinct contribution to the general public, and users, the surrounding environment, and urban communities.

“The International Architecture Awards,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and president of The Chicago Athenaeum, “celebrate the world's best new architecture and urban planning, no matter its form, size, or budget.”

“Respected by the profession and the public for over 20 years, these awards stand out for their unrivalled judging and global reach.”

“The awards recognize projects that showcase visionary thinking, design excellence, and real social impact that ultimately help make the future a better place.”

“The winning of the Museum’s International Architecture Award signals the highest standards of innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to improving people’s lives through thoughtful design.”

“Irrespective of style, complexity and size of both scheme and budget, successful projects demonstrate visionary or innovative thinking and excellence of execution, continues Narkiewicz-Laine.”

From a short list of over 1,000 submitted projects this year, the jury selected 185 projects deemed as the most superior and distinguished designs, as well as 144 honorable mentions.

Showcasing architectural excellence across five continents, key themes illustrated include:

Raffles Hotel and Resort (Saudi Arabia) by LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture), in which is built into a mountain top and a large artificial lake built into the sloping typography;

Clos du Val Winery (California, USA) by Surface design, Inc., in which the historic vineyards are restored and expanded the winery’s outdoor tasting spaces to introduce a more ecologically appropriate plant palette;

Evroc Data Center, Stone Clouds (Sweden) by Carl Fredrik Svenstedt Architects, in which massive walls give inertia to stabilize temperatures throughout the seasons, while ensuring security and solidity for these strategic sites;

Fifteen Fifteen by Ole Scheeren (Canada) by Buro Ole Scheeren and PFS Studio, in which a system of vertically shifted apartment modules enable dynamic yet rational and efficient layouts for residential units while the horizontal rotation of these modular elements projects living spaces outwards; and

5207 Dundas (Canada) by Henriquez Partners Architects and Graziani + Corazza Architects Inc., in which two towers emerge from a mid-rise podium, marking the key corners of the site and a tranquil courtyard is framed by the mid-rise podium and creates a quiet refuge from the busy city and adjacent railway.
