Tilt Shift’s linear design and use of recycled cotton encourages us to shift our value system toward sustainability. The post-industrial and post-consumer cotton used in Tilt Shift is derived from apparel waste, which is carefully sorted by color, shredded, and spun into yarn. Inspired by the isometric language and forced perspective of architectural drawings, the parallax pattern engages the viewer, prompting a new outlook. The progressive palette encompasses a range of unexpected color combinations of neutrals and bold brights, to reflect a contrast of artificial and natural components. Part of Luum Textiles’ Future Tense Collection, Tilt Shift is composed of post-industrial and post-consumer cotton from apparel waste, as it is 59 percent polyester and 41 percent Recover Upcycled Cotton. This innovative approach to textile-making not only repurposes waste that would have otherwise been sent to a landfill, but also cuts down on water usage during its manufacturing process. Cotton irrigation has caused severe drought in some areas of the world due to the amount of water the process demands—Luum’s Tilt Shift manufactures nearly half of its products without water, cutting down significantly on water waste. Though nearly 100 percent of textiles and clothing are recyclable, only about 1 percent ends up recycled at the end of its life. The textile industry contributes about 10 percent of global CO2 production and 5 percent of all landfills. Because sustainability is such a large issue within the textile industry, Luum Textiles is dedicated to making sure its collections feature fabrics that incorporate pre- and post-consumer recycled content. Tilt Shift’s sustainable production method is coupled with high performance—the fabric can withstand 100,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek scale.
