Designers: Zebra Innovation and Design, Zebra Technologies Corporation, Holtsville, New York, USA
Manufacturer: Zebra Technologies Corporation, Holtsville, New York, USA

The CS60 is Zebra’s next generation companion barcode scanner. The focus of the program was to design a single scanner that would continue to meet retail and logistic customer needs and help grow Healthcare market share. Cost and reliability are key drivers for retail and logistic customers.
For healthcare customers, the key drivers are ergonomics and being easy to clean and disinfect. There is also a need for in hand use and hands-free operation, along with the freedom of cordless and the lower cost potential of a corded version.

Form: The CS60 has a smooth pebble like form with minimal detailing with the intention to be comfortable in the hand and easy to clean. There are two color schemes: Black for retail, and White/Blue for Healthcare. It has a clean contemporary look that blends into retail, and HC environments.

The CS60-HC has an unintimidating form (as opposed to a gun form factor) and color scheme which can help to ease HC patient’s anxiety. The overall form and details guide the hand to the correct orientation for use. Soft rounded edges to make it easily pocketable.

Function: The Overall form and grip details ensure users can easily align the scanner in hand. The CS60 has two buttons and 3 backlit mode icons, all visible from the top surface. Bottom forefinger indent aligns the hand with the thumb properly placed over the main button.

The second user programable button is smaller and positioned away from the primary to avoid unintended actuation. The decode LED and user facing speaker port with haptic vibration give users feedback when the inductive touch buttons are actuated. All status Icons are back lit with multicolor LES’s to indicate status.
Safety: Safe LED aimer. The highly visible green aimer can be used in locations where laser aimers are not advised, (NICU, Labor and delivery and mother-baby units). The green color reduces the likelihood of triggering PTSD episodes.

Special plastics and IP65 sealing in the Healthcare version allows for safe wipe-downs with the widest selection of aggressive disinfectants used in today’s hospitals. Zebra’s built-in Virtual Tether functionality alerts users when a device is taken out of range, misplaced, or unintentionally left out of the cradle for an extended period of time.

Innovation
• First barcode scanner with convertible corded to cordless configuration.
• First Zebra scanner to use Qi contactless charging.
• First Zebra handheld scanner to incorporate multiple Inductive proximity switch triggers.

Design Impact
The user-friendly form factor and wide ecosystem of accessories should ensure that Zebra is able to take significant market share in the companion scanner space.
